Ouarzazate — nicknamed the 'Gateway to the Sahara' and the 'Hollywood of Africa' — sits 200 km southeast of Marrakech on the other side of the High Atlas Mountains, at an elevation of 1,160 metres. The city is home to two of Morocco's most significant film studios, CLA Studios and Atlas Corporation Studios, which have hosted productions including Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy, Game of Thrones, and Babel. A visit to the studios offers fascinating insight into desert filmmaking.
Beyond cinema, Ouarzazate is a base for exploring one of Morocco's most dramatic landscapes. The UNESCO-listed Kasbah Taourirt, the largest inhabited kasbah in Morocco, dominates the city centre and is a masterpiece of southern Moroccan mud-brick architecture. Just 30 km north, the iconic Aït Ben Haddou ksar rises from the desert — another film location and another UNESCO site. The Draa Valley, stretching south towards the Sahara, passes through palmeries, kasbahs, and oases that feel utterly remote.
